Check out Left Turn, a progressive column by PND members Billie Stanga and Richard Boyd, in the St. Tammany News the third Wednesday of every month!
Accomplishments & Activities
During the past three years PND has hosted several speaking events, including an excellent evening with former LSU Hurricane Director Ivor Van Heerden and another informative occasion with the former head of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, Carlton Dufrechene.
PND members have worked in a number of political campaigns- local, state, and national- over the past three years. Last December we began an annual Holiday Celebration with NDWC and DPEC, and recently held the first of a series of Campaign Workshops with those groups. Last October we hosted Dem Fest 09 (our third) and currently are busy planning Dem Fest 10.
We are a growing, vibrant organization that invites your participation and ideas. Currently we have paid memberships of approximately 60 and an email list several times that number. Join us and find out how much fun it can be to be a democrat on the Northshore. You truly are not alone.
PND Long-Term Goals
Assisting in campaigns for democratic candidates running for
Northshore offices.
Promoting the discussion of progressive, democratic ideals for
all Americans.
Working within St. Tammany to solve quality-of-life issues that cut
across partisan lines and which affect every resident in the area
and neighboring parishes.
Come and meet us at a Dem Fest Picnic! There will be food and drink, community information booths, music and you can meet Democratic candidate for governor Tara Hollis. Saturday October 15th from noon to 3pm at the Abita Springs Trailhead Pavilion, 22049 Main Street.

How many times have you heard these statements?
I thought I was the only Democrat in this parish!
You're a Democrat? Well, now that makes two of us?
I've felt so alone. I never bring up politics around my Republican friends.
Progressive Northshore Democrats (PND) was formed in 2007 by a group of committed community members who were involved in several national, state and local campaigns. We decided to come together to form an organization that would galvanize the many hidden democrats on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. Creating this organization has provided great opportunities to first promote our beliefs and values and second to diminish the feeling of political isolation. We strongly believe in the purposefulness of having meaningful dialogue and discussion of real issues.
Monthly meetings are held at the home of our chairwoman. These gatherings will always include a potluck dinner, terrific camaraderie among members and a spirited business meeting. Each get-together brings us a new face or two to the group.

Progressive Northshore Democrats Mission Statement
To encourage Democrats in St Tammany to step forward
and engage with one another and their community;
To develop an agenda for action based on our shared
democratic ideals;
To advocate for more progressive and transparent
leadership of the Louisiana Democratic Party;
To provide informed assessment of important
governmental policies and performance;
To offer support for progressive candidates and legislation
on a local, state and national level.
POLITICAL:
PND is firmly committed to advancing the progressive politics of the National Democratic Party and creating a strong environment in St. Tammany Parish that nurtures and fosters the participation of more Democrats seeking local, state and federal offices. We do not hesitate to take political positions on issues of local, regional, state or national interest. We have actively assisted Democratic candidates seeking public office in a variety of ways, including phone banking, door-to-door canvassing and election day gotv (get out the vote) efforts.
COMMUNITY:
PND has long been a supporter of collecting non-perishable items for the Covington Food Bank which provides for the less fortunate in our area. Moreover, we encourage our members to support financially or as volunteers important community outreaches, such as St. Francis Animal Sanctuary and the Cultural Alliance for the Americas. We also act as a resource for informing our members and others about important cultural, philanthropic, environmental and community events in St. Tammany. We were an integral part of the NDWC (Northshore Democratic Women's Club) Mardi Gras in Kandahar Project in Feb. 2010, which sent hundreds of boxes of beads and other MG items to our soldiers serving in Afghanistan in an effort to make their lives a little brighter.
PND adheres to the concept that vibrant, progressive organizations such as ours must do more than have regular meetings. Thus we engage our members in a variety of hands-on roles in sponsored events meant to advance progressive political ideas and enrich our community.
Dem Fest:
Demfest, a now annual Fall tradition, joins forces with PND and the St. Tammany Parish Executive Committee to put on an enjoyable and educational get -together for community progressives. Dem Fest offers the participant interesting speakers, good music and food, family activities and active involvement with community non-profits and other organizations.

In January 2009 many PND members helped to make our local DPEC fundraiser, a sparkling local gala a huge success to mark the inauguration of President
Barack Obama.

Recently PND, DPEC and the Northshore Democratic Women's Club combined their talents to initiate an ongoing series, devoted to the nuts and
bolts of getting Democrats elected to public office. The first in our series was held on Monday, May 12, 2010 and was well attended and received.

Last December PND, DPEC and NDWC held an end-of-the-year celebration at Abita Town Hall which we now intend to make an annual event.
Covington Bastille Day:
Activities each July include PND manning a progressive political information booth on the streets of Covington. We have also sponsored a booth
at the St. Tammany Parish Fair at the Covington Fairgrounds.
Get involved! Become part of our growing movement to bring two-party balance to St. Tammany Parish by joining Progressive Northshore Democrats. In this ever-growing organization you will find kindred political voices who share your commitment to an American Democracy that serves the needs of all, not just a selected few. PND meetings are held monthly and are always informative, sociable and spirited. We hold discussions on important local and national topics and plan for lively PND-sponsored local events. Be part of an exciting growing number of progressives in St. Tammany Parish. Membership is $20 for individuals and $30 for families annually.
